Bone fan, the skin leaf painted in black.
On one side, a passage from Mozart's opera, The Magic Flute (Act 1 scene 3), where three women, one holding a snake, mourn a dead soldier.
On the reverse, in a palace or church, a couple hold a cup together before an altar.
Good condition (small stains and tears with restorations to the leaf)
Height: 29.5 cm
According to expert Georgina Letourmy-Bordier: “This rare iconography is to be compared with the drawings and engravings distributed during performances of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's famous opera, ‘The Magic Flute’ or ‘Die Zauberflote’, in particular the drawings by Joseph and Peter Schaffer, for a performance in 1793 in Vienna (drawings preserved in Vienna, Historisches Museum Der Stadt Wien)”.
