Juno orders Aeolus to release the winds, fan by Lassimonne and Jules Vaillant, circa 1860
Fan, the skin leaf is painted from an episode in Virgil's Aeneid in which the goddess Juno asks Aeolus, master of the winds, to destroy Aeneas' fleet. Aeolus, who holds the winds captive in a cavern, is about to set them free to overwhelm the Trojan ships.
Very fine painting after a model by Louis Boullogne (known as Boullogne le Jeune, Paris 1654-1733), L'Air. Junon ordonne à Eole de déchaîner les vents, taken from the 1718 set of plates Les Quatre Éléments by French engraver Charles Dupuis (1685-1742).
Signed P. Lassimonne (possibly the French artist Lassimonne mentioned by Léo Taxil as a painter living at 22 rue de Lancry in Paris in his book La France maçonnique : nouvelles divulgations (ed La Petite guerre, Paris, 1888). Léon Wilnitsky's "Alte Kunst" gallery in Vienna owns a miniature with a similar signature and assumes that, given the quality of the painting, this artist was probably close to the French miniaturist Louis-Francois Aubry (Paris 1767 - 1851).
Exceptional mother-of-pearl sticks and guards, finely carved, pierced, engraved and applied with burgau (mother of pearl). The very rich and delicate decoration is symmetrically composed: angels, whose veils end in vegetal volutes topped by butterflies and flowers, frame a central cartel depicting a double gallant scene, one at the top of a staircase and the other in the wooded park where a boat awaits the lovers. The guards are adorned with a man on one side and a woman on the other, decorated with floral bows and scrolls, baskets of fruit and flowers, flaming torches...
Work of the table artist Jules Vaillant. The four sticks of the central medallion and the two guards are signed with the initials JV.
Good overall condition (two bottom sticks restored with synthetic reinforcements, two tiny burgau chips on one stick, reassembling leaf and mount ).
