Fan, the skin leaf delicately painted on a gold background with four scenes of gallantry from the 15th to the 18th century.
From left to right: a gallant dressed in Renaissance fashion attempts to entertain two women by demonstrating his skill at the bilboquet; two 16th-century gentlemen test their courage by challenging each other to a sword duel on a full-moon evening; a hunter from Molière's time shows his loyalty and fidelity to his family by hunting game for them; finally, a gallant from the Age of Enlightenment enchants his companion by playing music.
The scenes are separated by silver-painted caryatids featuring the god Pan, supporting medallions in blue camaïeu featuring cherubs playing and warring.
One of the scenes is signed G. Le Doux (we have found no information on this painter, but his work is strongly inspired by the French artist Édouard Moreau (1825-1878), whose paintings on leaves and sticks and guards fan, very similar in style, composition and subject).
Very rich mother-of-pearl sticks and guards, finely carved, pierced, engraved, applied with gold and silver foils and burgau decorated with dancing nymphs, putti, doves, flaming hearts and medallions featuring figures of women wearing flower crowns and men with feathered turbans.
Good overall condition (small tears and stains (on reverse), missing gold and silver foils, notably on the guards).
