The Aurora, after Guido Reni. Fan circa 1860
Fan, the leaf in fine painted skin of a reprise of Italian painter Guido Reni : Aurora.
Very delicate white mother-of-pearl sticks and guards, finely pierced, engraved, burgundy and applied with gold and silver leaf. The central cartel is carved with the farewell of Hector and Andromache, framed by medallions featuring angels in the clouds playing with garlands of flowers.
Good condition (minor restoration to the guard; a chip, filled, to the burgau).

Two other fans with similar sticks and the same subject are known, suggesting that they are the exceptional work of the same artist. One of them, executed for the fan-maker Félix Alexandre for the “Bal masqué” fan, is in the collections of the Fan Museum in Greenwich and is reproduced in Hélène Alexander's book Alexandre Fan-maker to the Courts of Europe (The Fan Museum, 2012. page 53). A third fan with same sticks, on the theme of Hélène's abduction by Paris, has been identified by expert Georgina Letourmy-Bordier as being most probably by the same artist, and will be sold at Coutau-Bégarie on June 5, 2020, under number 233.
