Coming by train to celebrate the harvest in Naples, fan circa 1863
Fan, the skin leaf painted with a view of the Bay of Naples on an autumn evening. Villagers dance to the sound of guitars and tambourines, probably to mark a harvest festival, while fishermen mend fishing nets.
Signed and dated Mayer 1863.
This was the marine painter Auguste Etienne François MAYER (Brest 1805-1890), who exhibited at the Salon from 1826 to 1869. Other views of the Amalfi coast (oil on canvas) are known by this painter.
Wooden sticks and guards, richly decorated and engraved with autumn activities (grape harvest and pressing, hunting...) and a medallion featuring a locomotive.
Important relief on guards carved of masks, bunches of grapes and flowers. Note the fine finish at the bottom of the guards, hiding the rivet.

This fan was probably commissioned, as the bottom of each sticks is pierced with a letter of the owner's name, Elisa Carrera.
Good condition (small tears and restorations to the leaf)

With its steam locomotive (nicknamed “Italia”), this fan illustrates an important event in Italian history: the creation of the first railroad line between Rome and Naples, inaugurated on February 25, 1863, a concrete symbol of the unification of the Italian peninsula in 1861. The 222-kilometer Rome-Naples railway line traversed the countryside of Lazio and Campania, passing through Frascati, Cassino, Capua and Aversa. The railroad cut journey times between the two cities considerably (almost 36 hours by stagecoach, compared with around 14 hours by train, reduced to 7 or 8 hours by 1864), thus boosting economic development.
