Pour Lulu, fan poem by Raymond Genty, circa 1920-1930

Wooden fan, the paper leaf painted with stylized poppies and inscribed with a poem by the French poet, lyricist and playwright Raymond Genty (Paris 1881-1950).

Pour Lulu

      I
Un éventail, un peu de brise
Qui vient mourir en voltigeant
Sur une épaule qui s'irise
Ou sur des dentelles d'argent

          II
Un éventail mais c'est marquise
Le baiser d'un Avril changeant
Lui fait fondre l'humeur banquise
Que forme un coeur en s'affligeant

     III
Rosalindes et Rosemondes
Ont causés des douleurs profondes
D'un seul mouvement d'éventail

     IV
Et c'est pourquoi je mets ces lignes
Sur ces vingt baguettes [...??]
Comme du bleu sur un vitrail.

     Raymond Genty
For Lulu

I

A fan, a little breeze
That flutters to its death
On an iridescent shoulder
Or on silver lace

II
A fan but it's marquise
The kiss of a changing April
Melts the banquise mood
That a heart forms in mourning

III
Rosalindes and Rosemondes
Have caused deep pain
With a single fan movement

IV

And that's why I put these lines
On these twenty rods [...??]
Like blue on a stained glass window.
