Great storm of 1703, fan leaf

Fan leaf painted in gouache, aplied on wood and enlarged, probably evoking the Great Storm of late November 1703, which caused widespread damage and loss of life from Brittany to Germany, via southern England, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Condition: restorations and chipped paint in places

Size : +/- 21,5 x 41 cm  (with frame 31 x 51 cm)

In his book The Storm (published by J. Nutt in 1704), English writer and journalist Daniel Defoe (author of Robinson Crusoe) describes the hurricane that hit England from November 24 to 27, 1703, drawing on his own experience and the accounts of survivors.
