After his coup d'état on December 10, 1851, Louis Napoléon Bonaparte sought recognition as the heir to his uncle, Emperor Napoléon, in order to secure his power, maintain popular support and win the loyalty of the army. He organized an official ceremony (a copy of the Distribution of the Eagles of December 5, 1804, conducted by Napoleon I after his coronation) which brought together representatives of all the garrisons of France and Algeria on December 10, 1852, on the Champs de Mars, in front of the Ecole Militaire buildings.
