The theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre on August 21, 1911 left a lasting impression on Parisians and made headlines for several days. The thief, Vincenzo Peruggia, (an Italian glazier from the Gobier company, who a few months earlier had made the protective glass for the museum's Italian works), took advantage of the closing day to unhook Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting, leaving the frame and glass on the stairs, and hid it at home for almost 2 years. Back in Italy, he tried to sell the portrait of Mona Lisa to a Florentine art dealer, who alerted the police. The painting was returned to the Louvre in early 1914.
