The legend of Pyramus and Thyseé was first developed by Ovid in his Metamorphoses. The two young Babylonians are forbidden by their parents to see each other. One night, they decide to meet outside the city. Thysbe arrives first, and is surprised by a bloody lioness. She flees, but loses her veil, which the lioness tears and soaks in blood. Pyramus arrives and discovers the stained veil and the tracks of the lioness. When Thysbe returns and sees her lover dead, she commits suicide.
