Large court fan in hinoki wood (Japanese cypress) painted with a turtle, a crane and the Three Friends of Winter
On the reverse, butterflies and birds.
The metal rivet features a bird on one side and a butterfly on the other.
Bears a label from the Rabeuf collection (for Mr. F. Rabeuf, part of whose collection of Chinese and Japanese objets d'art was sold at auction in 1909).
The guards are trimmed with white, green and red braided silk threads and flowers.

The Three Friends of Winter or Suihan Sanyou refer to three plants - pine, bamboo and plum - that do not wither in the cold. In Asian art and Confucianism, these three plant together symolise steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience that are the ideal of the scholar-gentleman.
